    Hi Gemma!

I know this is a bit of a late reply, but I’m ready to do my regional work now & just wondered if you’d had any luck with finding any?
My names Becca, I’m 28 from UK. I’m currently in Melbourne, but willing to go anywhere.
    Thanks,
    Becca

Ok, this may sound silly but i’m an Aussie (living in VIC) working as a nurse, I’ just wanting a break for a month or 2.. can I get a job fruit picking or similar in another state to see a bit of the country or are these type jobs just for international/overseas people looking for work in Australia?

    cheers

This forum was created to fight fruit picking scams. As we currently receive emails from working holiday makers and fruit pickers who have been scammed by people posing to be a legit farmer/employer. Share your story in this forum to make other people aware of the situation.

Please be very careful out there….

I have a little recruitment business where I introduce backpackers to Strawberry farms and accommodation in South East Queensland.

Yesterday I placed an English guy in a farm who also went looking in Toowoomba for the address of the farm and of course when he got there he realised he had been ripped off. Two weeks ago I placed a young French girl who paid someone, on Gumtree, for accommodation ($200) and who had promised her a job in Perth picking grapes. She had also bought a ticket to Perth from Sydney. Luckily the airline changed it for a fee. Three months ago I placed a Japanese girl who had, again on a Gumtree ad, paid $70 to secure accommodation for a ‘Apple Pickers in Stanthorpe’ ad. Of course, same story, as soon as the money is paid the emails go unanswered and money disappears.

DO NOT PAY ANYONE ON THE INTERNET TO SECURE WORK OR ACCOMMODATION

I place workers into accommodation but I do this face to face and give the person a receipt. If this is a bona fide placement for work and accommodation it should be done in person and you should be taken by that person to the place of accommodation.

Gumtree should be taking more action to stop these scammers using this site. I don’t think they are strict enough in checking their adverts. A lot of good sites, Fruit Picking Jobs and Working Holiday Jobs, will delay the release of the advert by a few hours to check that the post is a valid request for workers however Gumtree doesn’t and in the day or so it takes them to realise the scam and delete the ad there are a bunch of desperate backpackers who have paid money in the anticipation of a job.

I am a 25 y/o female and I am looking to travel to Australia in January of 2015. This is my first attempt at anything like this and I am looking for advice. I have already started the process of obtaining a working visa and now I am wondering which region of Australia to travel to to make the most of this experience. Any information is appreciated. Where have you enjoyed working? Are there any farms you especially liked working on, or any that gave you a bad experience? And of course, I hope to make some money doing this so I can keep traveling. Any advice is appreciated.

    Hi Meagen,

    Hows the job hunt going?

The key is to keep your eyes on the job board or be travelling through those towns your targeting.

Have you had any luck yet?

    Cheers

    Dimi
